Swim Teams
At the Blakley Family YMCA we have a team for swimmers of all ages.

• YMCA Swim Team
Join our swim team and be a part of the excitement of competitive swimming. All ages from 7 to 18 years are welcome. We will teach you starts, finishes, flip turns, and all the strokes. There will be away competitions and home meets, usually on Saturdays. YMCA membership is required for participation on the swim team. Swim team fees help to pay for the cost of a coach, lifeguard, pool time, home meets, equipment for practices and meets, and printed materials. Each swimmer will be responsible for purchasing their own equipment – goggles, swimsuit, and swim cap.

• Masters Swimming
We are in the process of organizing a United States Masters Swimming (USMS) team. Masters swimming is for adults aged 18 and over interested in improving their fitness through swimming. USMS is for competitive and non-competitive swimmers, fitness swimmers, and triathletes. Benefits include organized workouts, competitions, clinics, and workshops. Competitions include both pool and open water events.

Swim Lessons
All lessons are open to members and non-members.

• Y’s Special Needs Swim
This instructional class is designed for special needs children and a parent to learn aquatic safety, swimming skills and exercises.

• Private Swim Lessons
Private swim lessons are available. Lessons are set up for your ability, and designed around what you want to learn. You choose the day and time, each lesson will last 45 minutes. Ages range from infant to adult.

• SKIP - Parent/Child ages 6 months to 3 yrs.
This is the first half of the YMCA’s national SKIP program. The primary objective of these levels is to get both the parent and the child comfortable in the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun while the parent urges him or her to learn basic skills and have fun playing with toys and flotation devices. The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water, such as kicking, arm strokes, and breath control.

• Preschool Swim Lessons – Ages 3-5 years
Pike (Beginner) – is designed for new swimmers and teaches basic paddle stroke, kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort with holding face in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.

Eel (Advanced Beginner) – is a class that reinforces Pike skills. Children are taught to kick, dive, float, and perform the progressive paddle stroke. Children will be able to swim across the pool without assistance by the completion of this level.

Rays (Intermediate) – will review previous skills, learn more personal safety and rescue skills, build endurance by swimming on front and back, learn to tread water, and perform more progressive diving skills. They will be able to swim across the pool on their front and back without assistance.

• Youth Swim Lessons – Ages 6 years & up
Polliwogs (Beginner) – become acquainted with the pool, use of floatation devices and floating. Children will learn to paddle 25 yards with a float and 20 feet on their front, back, and side without a float. They should feel comfortable in deep water.

Guppies (Advanced Beginner) – will perform more skills without the aid of floatation devices. They are introduced to front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke as well as some diving skills. Children will swim a length of the pool without assistance at the completion of this level.

Minnow (Intermediate) – skills become more like those normally used in swimming. Swimmers learn more swimming, diving, personal safety, and rescue skills.

Fish (Intermediate) – work to perform the crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl stroke, and sidestroke, all with turns. Introduced to the butterfly stroke and the use of mask and fins.

Flying Fish (Advanced) – work on improving what they learned as fish.
